ABOUT
a distance, intertwined is a collaboration between Hub New Music and Silkroad’s Kojiro Umezaki (shakuhachi). The program features five works for Hub and shakuhachi by composers of the Asia/America New Music Institute that create dialogues between Eastern and Western musical traditions. In their works, composers Takuma Itoh, Angel Lam, SunYoung Park, Chad Cannon, and Umezaki reflect on concepts of musical influence and ancestry in a program of vividly colorful new compositions. The title of this program is derived from the classic Noh tale, Takasago, which tells the story of two trees which, that despite being planted many miles apart, supernaturally collapse the distance between them to intertwine their roots.
“a distance, intertwined” was commissioned by the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA with support of the Asia/America New Music Institute (AANMI). Additional support from Kyo-Shin-An Arts and the Blue Sage Arts Center.
