HubLab is a K-12 focused outreach program that uses improvisation and story-telling to create original compositions with students. During a HubLab residency, members of HNM and students use a narrative driven approach to composition, utilizing a story or theme to guide the creative process. Students with any level of musical background can participate, underscoring the guiding principle of HubLab that anyone can compose music. Working in groups, students also learn valuable team-building skills as they construct pieces together. At the conclusion of the residency, Hub New Music performs the original compositions in performance alongside works from its touring repertoire.
Below are samples from the most recent HubLab residency with the Boston Music Project, conducted via Zoom during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The launch of HubLab was sponsored by the Celebrity Series of Boston Neighborhood Arts Program in the 2020/21 season.
